It was like walking into a fairy tale…
Just doing errands – who would have thought it?
I walked into his tiny shop expecting nothing more than to drop off a chair I had ‘rescued’ and was now having reupholstered with a caramel and salmon damask fabric remnant that I had found for $35.
Dressed neatly in a buttoned-down shirt and dress slacks, this grandfather, appearing much too young for that badge of honor, shared how he educated himself as a child by reading EVERY VOLUME in the Encyclopedia Britannica. Hiking the Great Wall of China and traversing the Amazon, the world was his as he sat, book in hand, beneath the comfort of a shade tree.
I was mesmerized by this lovely man in his happy, little shop, with an open door as the only source of air conditioning, and this in the deep south on a dog day in August. Signs of his handiwork hung from the ceiling like bats in slumber inside the coziest of caves.
There are many people who shape who we are or who we become.
